Changing Beliefs and Mathematical Performance

Description

This article reviews research showing the importance of changing students' mindsets and beliefs about mathematics, and the benefits of incorporating growth mindset ideas in mathematics teaching.

Previous research has demonstrated that this incorporation generates an increase in motivation and brain activity in students when facing math problems. The article proposes moving beyond focusing solely on positive mindset messages toward reorganizing learning environments and teaching approaches, which is called a Mathematical Mindsets approach.

It also presents the results of a summer camp that was designed with a mathematical mindset approach and was tested in 10 school districts in the United States and in four countries.
