Three challenges define the current state of education.

The learning crisis

After the pandemic, Latin America was one of the regions with the highest growth in learning poverty in the world. Today it is estimated that 80% of 10-year-olds cannot read or understand a simple text. It is estimated that the region lost around 10 years of progress in learning outcomes. It is urgent to improve the quality of education to reverse these effects. (UNICEF, UNESCO & World Bank, 2022. Two years after: Saving a generation.)

The disruption of AI

Existing AI solutions are mainly focused on efficiency, which can generate detrimental effects for education, such as promoting outdated pedagogical practices, fragmenting teacher workflows, and generating dependence instead of critical thinking. The historical opportunity that AI brings becomes a risk if efficiency replaces pedagogy.

Inequitable adoption of AI

Innovations are usually adopted autonomously only by a small proportion of users — innovators and early adopters, who represent barely 15% (Rogers) — while the majority never get to use or adopt them in time. The result is that educational technology ends up widening existing gaps instead of closing them. It is crucial that AI reaches the places that need it most.
