Description

This activity encourages classroom participation and discussion as students explore the concept of equality by moving around the classroom. Give each student a pre-prepared colored circle (or use different shapes), for example red or yellow (or other colors). Using personal characteristics such as gender is not recommended. Make sure there are equal amounts, or a slightly larger amount of one color than the other.

Ask students: "How many students have red circles and how many have yellow circles?" Encourage students to get up and move around the classroom to figure it out. Then ask: "How can we show that we have an equal number of each color, or that there are more of one color than the other?" Observe their interactions as they try to solve the problem and justify their answers.

Next, ask: "How many students fit in a row on the carpet?" "How many rows will we have?" "What would be the best arrangement?" As students complete each task, record the corresponding number sentence on the board.
