Description

Many parents use "flash cards" to encourage learning mathematical facts, but these practices often focus on memorization without understanding and under time pressure. In our Math Cards activity, we maintain the card structure that children enjoy, but we shift the emphasis toward number sense and understanding multiplication, eliminating any time limit.

The goal of the activity is to match cards that represent the same numerical result, shown through different representations. Place all the cards on a table and ask the children to, in turns, select as many cards as they find with the same answer, regardless of representation. For example, the product of 9×4 can be represented through an area model, sets of objects like dominoes, and a number sentence.

When students match the cards, they must explain how they know that the different cards are equivalent. This activity promotes understanding of multiplication and reinforces mathematical facts in a meaningful way.
